D-U-N-S® Number
The D&B D-U-N-S® (Data Universal Numbering System) number is a nine-digit number code. It makes it possible to accurately identify companies from all over the world. Companies can be allocated to their parent companies, branches and headquarters, creating transparency.
What the D&B D-U-N-S® number enables you to do
Synchronise data
The D&B D-U-N-S® number makes data management easier: Duplicate or incorrect entries in the database can be recognised instantly.
Consolidate data
Various internal databases can be linked – even if they are from different ERP systems. This complements your internal numbering system.
Decrypt data
The D&B D-U-N-S® number can break down corporate networks into their individual parts and make business relationships clearer. For example, corporate hierarchies can be displayed or the customers who are also suppliers can be identified.
Areas of application in companies
The D-U-N-S® number, which was developed by D&B, has been the indispensable basis of all D&B products, solutions and ratings for 45 years. It is used in all of the company’s departments: In credit and risk management, in procurement management and in marketing and sales.
The D&B D-U-N-S® number is used to
- collate all relevant data on credit and default risks to a debtor. This enables you to make decisions based on objective information.
- display supplier networks. This reveals potential savings, opens up new supply sources while recognising default risks.
- As part of risk management, finance service providers and companies that are listed on the US stock exchange are actually obliged to display their internal relationships.

D&B assigns and manages the D&B D-U-N-S® numbers centrally. Each number is only allocated to one single company. This means that the company can even be identified if it changes name or address – even if it relocates abroad.
The D&B D-U-N-S® number is recommended and used by the European Commission and the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO).
